SMS Applications

Have data? There’s an app for that… mData!

Use SMS to Make Data Mobile

In addition to building a mobile list and sending text messages, you can also easily create SMS programs on Mobile Commons that allow people to find information on the go. Our mData module lets you build your own mobile search or data application from a spreadsheet, database or web service.

Very Easy to Setup

Enabling access to data via SMS text messaging is incredibly simple. All you need is a spreadsheet with two columns: the search terms and the responses. You can build the entire program in just a few minutes. The Blue Ocean Institute runs a program called FishPhone. You can text in the name of a fish and get back health and environmental information. You can try it by texting fish halibut to 30644.

Search by Location

With mData, you can text in an address and get back the closest results. For example, you could create a store locator just by uploading a spreadsheet of addresses. Because it’s so easy to setup, mData is also a great way to distribute location information to people for concerts, conventions, rallies, and other live events.

Turn SMS Messages into a Widget

What better way to advertise your mobile marketing program than with a viral widget? Use our Widget Builder to turn any mData application into a fully functional web-based Flash widget that you can embed on your site and share with your friends. And the “Send to Phone” button will automatically text people instructions on how they can continue to access your data while on the go.

Create Fully Featured SMS Apps

mData has a very easy to use API for customers to build fully featured applications using SMS. Every text message we receive will be sent to your server where your custom logic lives. When you send us a response, we’ll format it for mobile and send it back to the user.

Persistent Messaging

When using a shared short code, users text in a keyword to get started. That’s fine when they join a program, but it’s a little awkward when they’re interacting with your service over and over again. When you use mData, you can make your SMS program “sticky”, so all replies after the first one will go to your application. This eliminates the need for the user to text your keyword again, resulting in the best user experience.
